UTPAL MAJUMDAR A graduate in science, Utpal Majumdar did his post graduation in law and later obtained a post graduation in management. Utpal was a regular participant in extempore speech and debate competitions at the college and university level and on two occasions stood first in the All Bengal Inter College Debate Completion. Utpal started his career with ICI India Ltd and later joined Clarion Advertising. Utpal found his true calling when he joined Jalan & Co, a reputed solicitors' firm in 1978 and very shortly became a partner in the firm. In 1984, he set up his own legal firm and, at present, has 6 juniors and 15 assistants working for him. Utpal practices in the Calcutta High Court as well as the Supreme Court of India. Utpal is on the board of directors of several organisations including Howrah Mills Co Ltd, MKJ Enterprises, Archi Consultancy Pvt Ltd and Ramrajya Overseas Pvt Ltd. Utpal is a member of the Appeal Committee of the All India Football Federation and of several social clubs like the Calcutta Club, Calcutta Swimming Club, Calcutta Rowing Club and Dakshin Kalikata Sansad. He was President of the Excelciors Club, a first division playing cricket club. He is a member of the Mohun Bagan Athletic Club and has served as an Executive Committee member. He is a life member of the Cricket Association of Bengal. Utpal has been appointed member of the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal, an apex body of the Film Censor Board for three years by the Central Government. Utpal is a member of the Rotary Club of Calcutta South City and has served Rotary at the club and district levels in many capacities. He was club president in 1997-98 and was awarded the Presidential and Governor Citation in that year. Utpal was assistant governor, administration for three consecutive years, and assistant governor, service for a year. He has held the position of chairman of several committees, including Fellowship Committee. In 2000-01, he was district treasurer. Utpal has been elected Chairman of The Rotary News Trust for the year 2009-10. Utpal is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and life member of the 4 Way Test Association of India. He is married to Sunayana who is also a Paul Harris Fellow. They have two sons, Souvik, a practicing advocate in the Calcutta High Court and Sagnik, who has just completed his ISC form St Xavier's School, Kolkata. |
