| February 23 - Birthday of Rotary |
| The Rotary Oration Of the Rotary Club of Calcutta
The first Rotary meeting was held on the evening of 23rd February 1905
in the office of Gustavus E. Loehr, a mining engineer. The exact address
was Room 711 of the Unity Building at 127 North Dearbon Street, Chicago,
USA. Others present on the occasion were Rotary's Founder and convener
Paul Harris, a lawyer and two of his other friends coal dealer Silvester
Schiele and merchant tailor Hiram Shorey. This day is considered to be
the birthday of Rotary and was later declared by Rotary International as
"International Understanding and Peace Day". The month of February was
designated as the "World Understanding Month". Each club, on that day,
gives special recognition and emphasis to Rotary's commitment to
international understanding, friendship, and peace. |
