Through PolioPlus, Rotary leads private-sector participation in the global effort to eradicate polio. The value of the half-billion-dollar program by 2005 is multiplied by the thousands of volunteers in more than 100 countries helping to immunize children. The program started in 1981.
Rotary's volunteer and financial assistance in vaccination efforts means polio will disappear in nation after nation and region after region. Polio eradication will not occur until the disease disappears from all nations and all regions.
Rotary's community-based leadership in target countries was a deciding factor in the World Health Assembly's goal of polio eradication. Rotary International is the key private partner in the global fight to eradicate polio.

Polio India Update

2006-Oct-07
8 more polio cases , 7 cases of type 1 and 1 case of type 3 were reported
(1 from Maharashtra, 1 from Uttaranchal and 6 from Uttar Pradesh)
as on October 7, 2006 for the year 2006.

The status of Polio cases is as under:

Year 2004 = 134 wild Polio cases
Year 2005 = 66 wild Polio cases
Year 2006 = 360 wild Polio cases
(as on October 7, 2006 from 60 Revenue Districts)

The RI District wise and the state wise break-ups are attached.
