We are the first Rotary Club in India, indeed we are the longest running club in Asia.
Only two other clubs in the continent were chartered a few months before us,
(1) Manila,
Philippines (which closed down for four years during World War II) and
(2) Shanghai, China which after being
closed for many
years is now running as a provisional club.
No wonder we are affectionately nicknamed
The Old Number One.
Nitish Laharry, the first Asian RI President was from our club.
We are also the biggest club in RI District 3290 - which again is the biggest
District in Rotary as far as number of clubs (135) are concerned.
Calcutta, recently renamed Kolkata, is the gateway to the East. Situated on the banks of
the river Hooghly - an off shoot of the mighty Ganges - we are home to the Eden Gardens the fabled cricket stadium. Ours is also the birthplace of football in India. Once the second city of the British Empire and capital of India, today it is the state capital of West Bengal in
eastern India. Adorned with stately Victorian buildings side by side with modern skyscrapers we are a
mega city of 11 million people. Our local languages are Bengali and Hindi but English is widely known and spoken.
Our city will celebrate its 319th birthday (1696). Our Kolkata can boast of five Noble Laureates - including Mother Teresa who made it her home.
With a membership exceeding 300, our Rotary club is the largest in our
international District 3290 (which also includes the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal and the
Andaman & Nicobar islands). Our club office is located in the magnificent Rotary Sadan (the abode of Rotary) which has an auditorium,
children's library, computer centre, consumer guidance and our Rotary Archives.
We also have an Rotary information e-mail service for Rotarians not residing n Calcutta. Write to us at rotanet@vsnl.net about the information you are looking for and we would try and get it for you.
This Website was first put up on 26-Sep-1999 (the club's 80th birthday). Our endeavor has been to crystallize Rotary information and present it in a capsule format. We have kept our website intentionally simple and graphics free to allow quick loading.
